C.D. Leganés strengthens its midfield with the signing of Iker Undabarrena

C.D. Leganés reinforces its midfield for the 2022/23 season with the signing of Iker Undabarrena Martínez. The 27-year-old midfielder, with over 100 games of experience in LaLiga SmartBank, arrives from Portuguese Second Division team C.D. Tondela and signs until 30 June 2023, with an option for another season.

Trained from youth in Athletic Club's youth academy, he made his debut with the red and white first team in 2012 in a Europa League match. Still at youth age, he was promoted to Bilbao Athletic due to his great projection, achieving promotion to the Second Division in the 2014/15 season. The following year he made his debut in the silver category, captaining a reserve team that included well-known names for the Pepinero fans such as Mikel Vesga and Unai López.

A knee injury in February 2015 halted his progress, and he returned to the pitch in October of the same year. Undabarrena remained at Athletic until 2018, when he signed for C.D. Tenerife. With the club he made 50 appearances in two seasons, before moving to C.E. Sabadell in 2020/21, again in LaLiga SmartBank.

More than 100 matches in LaLiga SmartBank and experience in the Portuguese First Division.

Last season he lived his first experience outside Spanish football in the ranks of C.D. Tondela, in the Portuguese First Division. With the Portuguese side he reached the Cup final, and this season he played in the final of the Portuguese Super Cup, as well as having already played two league games.

International with the Spanish U17 national team, Undabarrena is a positional midfielder who stands out for his good handling of the ball and his ability to build up play, as well as giving balance to the team tactically. He has signed for one season with the option of a second, and will start training this Friday under the orders of Imanol Idiakez, with his presentation taking place next week.
