Guido Carrillo: “We have a clear objective which is the survival and it is the only thing that matter to us right now”.

C.D Leganés’ forward Guido Carrillo answered the questions sent by the media after this Wednesday’s training session at I.D Butarque. The Argentinean footballer analyzed the return to competition and the different scenarios that may occur during the matches.

Carrillo sees the football return as good news: “The level is not the same right now, but everything will normalize as matches are being played. The first matches will be hard for everyone, not just me. I wish to recover the level I had before the competition stopped. Continuity will be key for me and all the team. The only thing I am currently looking for is that both the team and me feel well and fight together for the survival”.

“Playing without fans takes away a big part of what makes football a beautiful sport”

The Argentinean forward evaluates what playing without fans is: “There is no doubt that playing local will not be the same. We make ourselves strong at Butarque, last season we confirmed that and playing without fans takes away a big part of what makes football a beautiful sport. The fans are one of the best things of football and an empty stadium make you think that something is missing as what happens in Germany. But we must adapt ourselves and focus”.

“Fans put something extra that motivate you”, continues, “The contact with our fans is important, at least for me. Beyond being professionals and committed to what we do, we must find a way to get motivated”.

Last season, Carrillo scored the winning goal on extra-time against Real Valladolid, the first rivals of the pepineros once the competition returns. He does not know how would he celebrate if he scores again: “I don’t know if I would go to the stands (laughs), but it is hard not to share that moment with your teammates because it is something spontaneous and difficult to control, share that with your teammates and the fans is the best”.

“We have the same mentality than before”

Carrillo affirms that he does not feel more pressure for the extra responsibility he may have after players such as En-Nesyri and Braithwaite left: “We are all here to help. Goals define if you get points or not but there is a complete team committed to work together to achieve the objectives. Braithwaite’s departure was a big loss for us but those are rules matters and we should focus ourselves on the pitch and getting prepared. We have a strong team to fight”.

Leganés and all the teams will have to compete on dates in which the league would be finished: “Maybe today we might already be saved from relegation. We must face reality, we have a clear objective which is the survival and it is the only thing that matter to us right now. We won’t be able to celebrate with our fans but definitely will be happy and satisfied”

“We are focused on securing the survival”

When questioned about his contract after his second season at Butarque, Carrillo is not worried: “I still have another year of contract with Southampton but I rather not to think about it. We currently have a clear objective of saving Leganés from relegation and that is what we are focused on. I’m not worried about the future right now”.

The number 18 was questioned about Mauricio Pellegrino, the manager that coached him on different teams such as Leganés and that recently signed with Vélez Sarsfield: “We all know what Mauricio gave to us at Leganés. I have a lot of appreciation for him because we know each other for years, but that is what football is about, someday you are here and the next one you are not. You must keep moving forward, I wish him the best at Argentina and I’m sure he will achieve good things there”.

“The player must act according to the protocol and we all should contribute”

The south American forward commented about the automatic renewal of all the season ticket holders: “I think is something remarkable. All the people that was with us deserve that, is a good gesture from the club. That is an example of how we are prepared for these times”.

Finally, Carrillo didn’t want to go deeper into the fact that some player may have broken LaLiga’s protocol before the return to competition: “We all can make mistakes and it is now on the past. The player must fulfill the protocol as anyone and we all should contribute.
