Mario Soria relives with C.D. Leganés his historic goal against C.D. Castellón

C.D. Leganés returns to receive C.D. Castellón twenty-seven years after they did it for the first and last time. A match that will always be remembered for the goal scored by the goalkeeper Mario Soria, a milestone that the club wanted to remember in the week prior to the match against Castellón.

It was November 13, 1993, and C.D. Leganés was living the first season of its history in the Second Division. After their promotion a few months earlier, the Pepineros were struggling in their first months of competition, having only three draws in the first ten matchdays and reaching the eleventh as bottom of the table.
The Blue and Whites hosted Castellón at the Luis Rodríguez de Miguel stadium, in a match in which Luis Ángel Duque's men saw the visitors take the lead with a goal in the 80th minute. In stoppage time, the Pepineros went all out in search of an equalizer, forcing several corners. In the last one, the cross from the right fell to Mario who had gone up to finish, and he connected a header that slipped into the Castellón goal to get a point.
C.D. Leganés would start a positive streak after that match, and a week later they would achieve their first victory in professional soccer in Cádiz, to end up saving the category in the last match against Hércules.
Mario remained for six seasons in the first team of C.D. Leganés between 1989 and 1995, in which he played 39 official matches and in which he shared the goal with Javier Aguilera, the player with more matches in the history of the club. After hanging up his gloves, he worked as goalkeeping coach and club delegate until 2013, when he joined the staff of Real Madrid C.F., where he currently works as goalkeeping coach for Real Madrid Castilla.
