Martin Braithwaite, the only player with a Puebla background to play in the European Championship

Euro 2020 kicks off this Friday with the opening match Italy-Turkey, and finally only one player who has defended the shirt of C.D. Leganes will be part of the final phase of the tournament: it will be the Danish Martin Braithwaite, currently enrolled in F.C. Barcelona.

Braithwaite, who played 48 official matches and scored thirteen goals for Leganés between January 2019 and February 2020, when the azulgrana club paid his termination clause after Ousmane Dembélé's long-term injury, will be drawn with the Denmark national team in Group B of the tournament, initially competing against Belgium, Russia and Finland.

He will be the only former Pineda player to take part in the final phase of the European Championship, as, in the end, other players who defended the Blue and Whites' jersey were left out of the final call-up list. This is the case of goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, currently at Real Madrid C.F., who was Leganés' goalkeeper in the 2018/19 season, who fell at the last minute from the final list of Ukraine after entering the pre-selection.

Bryan Gil, Lunin, Óscar or Siovas took part in the qualifiers but will not be in the finals.

Two former pepineros who made their debut this past season with the senior national team will not be with Spain either: winger Bryan Gil and midfielder Óscar Rodríguez. The first, blanquiazul in the second half of the 2019/20 course, has already played three games with Spain, the last one last Tuesday against Lithuania precisely in Butarque; Óscar, for his part, made his debut last September, but his lack of continuity in Sevilla F.C., to which he arrived after two seasons at Leganés (2018-2020), has distanced him from Luis Enrique's plans.

Finally, another former pepinero as Dimitrios Siovas, who played at Butarque between 2017 and 2020 and currently plays for S.D. Huesca, participated with Greece in the qualifying round, but the Greeks did not qualify for the finals.

Diego Llorente, born and raised in Leganés, in Spain's call-up list.

Diego Llorente is in Spain's final squad. The Leeds United center-back, born and raised in Leganés, was called up by Luis Enrique among the twenty-four players who will defend our national team in the tournament that starts this Friday, and who will carry the name of Leganés in the highest European national team competition.
