Samuel Eto'o Fils


Samuel Eto'o arrived at Madrid as a young 16-year-old. Real Madrid loaned him to Leganés in the 1997 summer, to be part of a team managed by Pedro Braojos that in the last campaign had achieved their best ever season in Second Division.

With the number 11 at the back, he debuted with the white and blue on August 30, 1997, at the Luis Rodríguez de Miguel, in a 1-0 victory against Eibar in which he started and played 51 minutes. His first goal wouldn’t take long, on September 10 at Vallecas in a Copa del Rey match. During the year he would score another three league goals agains Toledo, Albacete and Logroñés.

Eto’o would be part of the historic starting XI that inaugurated Butarque on February 14, 1998 against Xerez. The last of the thirty matches he played as cucumber would be in Toledo on May 9. That year, Leganés would end the season around midtable and Eto’o would start shining as a footballer to then go to Real Madrid, Espanyol, Mallorca, Barcelona, Inter, Chelsea and Everton. The rest of his history, doesn’t need an introduction.

Samuel Eto’o has always carried Leganés in his heart and when he could he has showed his love for the team where he started. Recently, he sent a message of support from London previous to the 2014 promotion Play Off: “It was one of the best periods of my life. There I met one of the best persons I have ever met in football in Pepe Mesas, and we remain being friends today”.
