Asier Garitano resigns at C.D. Leganés

C.D. Leganés and Asier Garitano Agirrezabal reached an agreement on Wednesday morning for the coach from Bergara to return to the pepineran bench for the rest of the season and the following one. In the event of promotion in the 2021/22 season, the 'mister' would be renewed for a third season. One of the most successful coaches in the club's history returns for what will be his second visit to Butarque.

Asier Garitano is the second coach with the most games in the history of C.D. Leganés, with 222 matches under his management. His achievements at the club include promotion to the Second Division in 2014, the second in the history of C.D. Leganés, and the historic promotion to the First Division in 2016, which saw the Pepineros reach the elite of Spanish soccer for the first time in their 88-year history.
Asier, 51 years old, coached C.D. Leganés for five seasons, one in Second Division 'B', two in Second Division and two in the top flight, achieving two permanences and reaching, in his last season at the club, a historic semifinals of the Copa de S.M. El Rey, staying one game away from reaching the final of the K.O. tournament of the 2017/18 season.
After an extensive career as a player in Segunda and Segunda División 'B', Garitano made his debut on the bench at Alicante C.F., later moving on to C.D. Castellón, Orihuela C.F. and C.D. Alcoyano before landing at Butarque in 2014. After leaving the club, he coached Real Sociedad in the 2018/19 season and Deportivo Alavés in the 2019/20 season, both in LaLiga Santander.
Now, Asier Garitano returns to the Butarque benches to help C.D. Leganés achieve their objective in the second round of the current 2020/21 season. The coach will be presented in the press room of the Instalacion Deportiva Butarque on Thursday, January 28 at 1:00 pm, after the first team's morning training session. With him, his physical trainer Miguel Pérez returns to the club.
