Legends of Leganés

ÓSCAR FERNÁNDEZ

Óscar Fulgencio Fernández Moraleda (Madrid, June 17, 1971) joined Leganés in the 1994/95 season, the club’s second in Segunda División. Under Luis Ángel Duque, the young 23-year-old defender quickly became a regular in the white-and-blue lineup, almost always as a right-back. Alongside players like Aguilera, Tocho, Dorado, Chuso, Alfredo, and Miguel Ángel, he helped shape a team that, on the field, was relegated that year to Segunda División B but ultimately retained its status due to administrative reasons.

From that season onward, Óscar remained virtually unmovable in his position. Over the nine campaigns he wore the Leganés shirt, he played more than thirty league matches each season, except in 1996/97, when an injury interrupted his progress. It can be said that almost the entire first era of Leganés in Segunda División featured Óscar as a central figure, missing only the team photos of the first and last campaigns in the second tier.

Óscar experienced historic moments for Leganés, such as the inauguration of the Estadio Municipal Butarque on February 14, 1998, against Xerez. Always consistent and committed, he was also comfortable in a more advanced role on the field, ahead of the full-back, where he performed perfectly. He played 297 official matches for Leganés in Liga and Copa del Rey, scoring seven goals. Perhaps the most special was the one he scored at the Vicente Calderón on February 2, 2002, when Leganés led 0-2 and Óscar’s goal made it 0-1, silencing the rojiblanca crowd.

The match in Terrassa, where Leganés was relegated to Segunda División B (though later saved administratively), was Óscar’s last in the white-and-blue shirt. The same coach who brought him to Leganés, Luis Ángel Duque, later took him to Cultural Leonesa, marking his final professional adventure in Segunda B. Yet his heart will forever remain white and blue. Years later, he worked as a youth coach at the club and attended, as a fan, the 2014 promotion to Segunda División in L'Hospitalet alongside his son. Undoubtedly, a true legend with 300 matches as a Leganés player.
