C.D. Leganés officially kicks off the 2026/27 season this Sunday (7:00 p.m.) at Montilivi against Girona F.C., in what will be the opening match of the LALIGA HYPERMOTION season for both teams.
Leganés is beginning its nineteenth season in the second division, and it’s doing so with a squad that has been significantly revamped compared to last season. Starting with the coaching staff, Rubén Albés, from Vigo, will aim to build on the work he’s done in previous stints in the Second Division, where he has extensive experience.
As for the roster, it has also undergone a major overhaul this summer, with as many as thirteen departures from last season and ten new signings so far (Raúl Fernández, Luca, Tejero, Kechta, Buurmeester, Atienza, Gharbi, Soko, Gothler, and Unax), in addition to the return of players on loan, Javi Hernández and Pauwels. For this match, Franquesa, Diawara, and Gothler will be out due to injury.
Tough opener against one of the promotion favorites
The Pepineros will face a tough opener against Girona, one of the recently relegated teams and a top contender for promotion. The Catalans are also debuting a new coach in Quique Álvarez, and so far they have added Izan, Morante, Unai Hernández, and Pyshchur to last season’s core roster, along with the returns of players such as Asprilla, Jastin, and Minsu. Portu, Ounahi, and Unai will not be available this Sunday.
About fifty Leganés fans will gather at Montilivi to cheer on Leganés in the first game of the season, which will be officiated by the referee from Navarre, Mr. Iosu Galech.
