C.D. Leganés bolsters its defense with the signing of Montero 

C.D. Leganés has reached an agreement with 27-year-old defender Francisco Javier Montero Rubio for him to join the club for the next two seasons, with an option for a third. The Andalusian center back, who has extensive international experience, arrives after being promoted to LALIGA EA SPORTS a few months ago with Málaga C.F.

A product of Atlético de Madrid’s youth system since the cadet level, he made his debut with the Rojiblancos’ first team in 2018, playing fourteen official matches that season across LALIGA, the Copa del Rey, and the Champions League. The following year, he was loaned to Deportivo, racking up playing time in LALIGA HYPERMOTION, and the next season he went out on loan again, this time to Turkish club Besiktas, with whom he won the league title.

Now a full-time player for the Turkish club, he won the Super Cup in the 2021–22 season and returned to Champions League action, while the following season he left on loan during the winter transfer window to Hamburg.

He has extensive experience in LaLiga, European competitions, and promotion with Málaga C.F.

His next stint was with Portuguese club Arouca, before returning to Spain in 2024 to play for Racing. With the Cantabrian club, he competed in the promotion playoffs, and last season he joined Málaga, playing in thirty matches and securing promotion to LALIGA EA SPORTS with the Andalusian side.

After wrapping up his time with Málaga, Montero is now joining Leganés to continue advancing his career. The left-footed center back, who played for Spain’s U-21 national team, has signed a contract through 2028, with an option for an additional season, and will immediately begin training with his new teammates. His official presentation will take place next week.
