C.D. Leganés coach Paco López appeared at a press conference on Saturday after the match between Leganés and Burgos C.F. at the Ontime Butarque Stadium, corresponding to matchday 12 of LALIGA HYPERMOTION, which ended in a 1-2 defeat.
The coach assessed the match as follows:
Match assessment: "We are very disappointed, not because of the result but because of the way we played. It is not up to the standard that this team should be playing at. We had started the game very well, and then in the next play we committed an unnecessary foul in the middle of the field, a second ball, and enabled the player who scored the goal. Then another set piece where we lost our mark, we weren't where we needed to be, and they took the lead. We weren't struggling, we knew what kind of game we were going to face. We didn't respect the offensive positions we had to respect, we didn't do what we had worked on during the week, and if you attack more with the ball, you're likely to lose the game. We had eight corners in the first half and didn't hurt our opponents. It was a terrible game, we're very hurt, but we have to move on. It's a learning experience for everyone, for me first and then for the rest of the players".
Reaction capacity: “If you do things wrong, it's normal that you don't generate anything. Your heart gets the better of your head and you do things badly, without fluidity, without ideas and without respecting where we could hurt Burgos.”
Naim: "Duk played in his position. We understood that he could do more damage down that wing. We wanted to play between the lines with Óscar Plano and look for those spaces inside, but it didn't work out for us."
Predictable team: “When you don't respect offensive positions, you don't understand the moments when you can hurt your opponent, you have a lot of people in front of the ball, and we could barely get past their two forwards. If we don't do those things, what happens is what happens: we do terribly.”
Set pieces: “Corners come from attacks that don't end in goal-scoring situations, and in games like this, where you know it's going to be difficult to create chances and a sense of danger, it's something we have to keep working on. It's not the first time this has happened to us. We're struggling to score goals. We have to keep going, there's no other option.”
Substitutions: “You always try to improve the team. At halftime, we were behind, so we took out a defender and put in a forward. You try to find those positions where we could do damage, but they weren't successful either. When you lose, the substitutions are wrong, the approach is wrong. Everything went wrong.”
Lack of ideas: "We didn't achieve what we had worked on at any point. I take responsibility for not having had more of an impact. We had worked on it during the week, even before the Cup, and when you don't do well positionally, this is what happens. Our analysis of the opponent was very clear: outnumber their two forwards with three and start creating space inside, have players open for one-on-ones, and get people into the box. We had a hard time understanding that. Burgos played a very serious game defensively, they have a very clear game plan, and we knew that if we weren't solid, we weren't going to win the game."
Refereeing: “I'm not going there. When you play badly, it's not worth it. There were some things I didn't like, but it's not worth it with the game we played.”
Pauwels: “We understood that on the right and being fresh, he offers much more than on the left. We wanted natural footers for those crosses from the wings, having two forwards and people coming in from the second line.”
