C.D. Leganés and Asier Garitano part ways

C.D. Leganés and Asier Garitano will not be working together going forward. The coach's second stint at the club comes to a close, with the club having won ten points in their last 13 league fixtures and currently sat in the relegation zone.

The club would like to thank its most decorated manager for completing his second period as the Pepinero coach. Asier first arrived at the club in 2013, when the club was still in the third division, and managed to secure the club's second-ever promotion to the Segunda División already in his first season, restoring professional football to Leganés for the first time in a decade.

His second season saw him consolidate the club's position in LaLiga SmartBank, with the club's historic promotion to the Primera División coming on 4th June 2016 after an incredible year of Garitano at the helm culminated in Pablo Insua's legendary Anduva goal, which secured the Pepineros' place among the elite of Spanish football.

The manager with the second-most fixtures and second-most wins for the club

A difficult first season, with safety secured only on the penultimate matchday in San Mamés, Garitano's second year in LaLiga Santander was far more comfortable, even helping to bring the club for the first time to the semi-finals of the Copa Del Rey.

After two and a half years away from the Butarque, Asier returned to Leganés on 27th January 2021 to guide the Pepineros to their first play-off promotion round to the top flight ever. Garitano can count himself as the manager with the second-most games under his belt at the club, with 258 encounters, as well as the second-most wins from the bench, 100 wins in charge, behind Luis Ángel Duque in both respects.

Adopted son of the Villa de Leganés in 2017, Asier Garitano's name will forever be commemorated in the pages of Leganés' history as one of its most successful and brilliant managers.

Thank you for everything, Asier!
