C.D. Leganés celebrates its 93rd anniversary this Wednesday.

C.D. Leganés celebrates 93 years of history this Wednesday, June 23. The pepinero club was founded in 1928 and is currently facing its nineteenth season in professional soccer after four seasons in the First Division and another fourteen in the Second Division.

The club was officially founded on June 23, 1928 by Félix Pérez de la Serna, giving continuity to the initial project of C.D. Once Leones. Its first president was Ramón del Hierro, and its first kit consisted of blue and white pants, later changing to green and white and, finally, to white and blue.

Changes of kit, moves and promotions in the eighties, nineties and in 2014.

Its first matches were played at the Campo de Tiro, although in the 1930s the club moved to a new field where the Plaza de Roma is currently located. In 1966, the club moved to the Municipal Luis Rodríguez de Miguel, before moving to Butarque in 1998, a stadium that has undergone several renovations up to its current capacity of 12,454 spectators.

C.D. Leganés began to grow exponentially in the 80's, with the first promotion to Second Division 'B', and in the 90's, with the first promotion to professional soccer in 1993 under Luis Ángel Duque, the coach who has managed the most matches in the club's history. After relegation in 2004, promotion in L'Hospitalet in 2014 returned the pepineros to Second Division.

Promotion to Primera División in 2016 allowed the club to achieve growth at all levels.

After a brief two-season journey, 2016 saw the club's greatest historical milestone: promotion to Primera División on June 4, 2016. Leganés played for four consecutive seasons in the top flight, achieving a sporting, economic, structural and social growth that made them reach the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey or exceed 10,000 season ticket holders.

Currently, Leganés is facing its second consecutive season in LaLiga SmartBank, which will start again with Asier Garitano on the bench and with the aim of returning to the top flight with the help of a fan base eager to return to Butarque after a year and a half without being able to do so due to the pandemic. Happy 93rd anniversary, pepineros!
