Leganés will visit Athletic Club this Thursday (21:00h) at San Mamés for the fourth time since playing in First Division. This stadium is a special place for the pepineros: they secured their first survival there.
It was the first time the pepineros played at San Mamés (the second team had already done it getting an important win that helped them on their promotion intentions). It was on the 2016/17 season in which the pepineros needed a point to reach the mathematical survival.
Szymanowski’s goal to reach the survival
The locals got ahead early in the match after a goal by Aduriz but Leganés did not quit and scored a goal on the second half with a goal by Szymanowski. It was a goal that allowed Asier Garitano’s team to remain another year at the top. Bustinza, Siovas, Rubén Pérez, Szymanowski and Guerrero were the current pepineros that were also part of that match.
Leganés has played two more matches at San Mamés for LaLiga’s match but could not sum up points in any of them. Athletic won the 2017/18 match after Raúl García scored two goals while on the last season the rojiblancos also won 2-1 with an extra-time goal by Muniain. Jonathan Silva scored Lega’s goal that day.
Leganés and Athletic have already faced each other on this season’s first round at Butarque. They tied (1-1) with goals scored by Raúl García (Penalty Kick) and a free kick by Óscar Rodríguez. The total balance of matches played between both teams is one win for Leganés, three draws and three wins for Athletic.
