Preview: C.D. Leganés returns to LaLiga looking to kick off the second half of the season with a win at Las Palmas

C.D. Leganés visits U.D. Las Palmas this Sunday (20:30) at the Gran Canaria Stadium, in a match corresponding to the twenty-second matchday of LaLiga SmartBank. The pepineros are looking for a good start of the second round of the championship against a rival they already defeated in the opening match of the competition.

Twenty-two days have had to elapse for C.D. Leganés to face a league match again. The Blue and Whites have not competed in the regularity tournament since January 2, when they obtained a point in their visit to C.F. Fuenlabrada. Since then, the postponement of the match against U.D. Almería and the weekend reserved for the Copa del Rey round of 32 have meant that the team did not compete again with points in dispute.
For the clash on the islands, C.D. Leganés will be looking for three new points with which to settle in the upper part of the table. José Luis Martí's team are sixth with a game in hand, and for this match they will be able to count on the latest addition, the Mallorcan striker Brandon Thomas. Midfielder Rubén Pérez will not be able to travel after his positive for Covid-19 was confirmed and he is recovering at home.

U.D. Las Palmas seeks its third consecutive win in LaLiga

For their part, U.D. Las Palmas come into the match in one of their best moments of the season. The Yellows have beaten the top two teams, R.C.D. Espanyol (1-0) and R.C.D. Mallorca (0-1), although it is true that in between they lost in the Copa against C.D.A. Navalcarnero (1-0). Pepe Mel's men have only lost once in the last seven matchdays and are in ninth place, five points behind the pepineros.
With a view to Sunday's clash, the coach of the islanders acknowledged in a press conference the possibility of having up to eight absentees for the match. Up to three players could miss the match as a result of Covid-19 or close contact: these are the cases of Clemente, Jonathan Silva and Róber. In addition, Ale Díez, Aythami and Cedrés are out due to injury, while Pejiño could return after overcoming his discomfort.
The match will be refereed by the Navarrese referee Mr. Iosu Galech Apezteguia.
