C.D. Leganés returns to Oviedo almost five years after its last visit to Carlos Tartiere. A match of indelible memory for both club and fans, as it meant a big step in the fight to achieve the first and only promotion in the history of the team to LaLiga Santander.
It was May 26, 2016, the antepenultimate day of LaLiga was played and Leganés needed to win to reach second place in the last two matches against Real Oviedo, who were playing their chances of entering the play-offs.
Gabriel's goal and Serantes' save from Susaeta's penalty kick
Asier Garitano lined up: Serantes; Bustinza, Mantovani, Insua, Albizua; Sastre, Timor; Miramón, Gabriel, Szymanowski; and Asdrúbal. In the second half, Rubén Peña, Alberto Martín and Víctor Díaz came on. Leganés had chances that they were unable to convert until, in minute 60, Gabriel Pires took advantage of a loose ball in the area to make it 0-1.
However, the pepineros would have to suffer and, in minute 65, referee Arcediano Monescillo pointed out a penalty in an action outside the area between Mantovani and Toché. Susaeta took the kick and Serantes saved the shot with a spectacular save. Lega would end up winning to the delight of the players and the fans, who came in large numbers despite the fact that it was a working day.
Leganés would go on to beat Llagostera (2-0) and Mirandés (0-1), and achieve promotion to the First Division for the first time in their 88-year history. Something that, without that match in Oviedo, would have been much more difficult to achieve.
