C.D. Leganés head coach Paco López spoke this Friday in the press conference ahead of the match that the pepinero team will play on Sunday (14:00) against Málaga C.F. at the Ontime Butarque Stadium, corresponding to Matchday 10 of LALIGA HYPERMOTION.
The coach assessed the team’s situation before the match as follows:
Continuity: "Every week we work on improving and on the aspects we analyse and believe we must continue insisting on. We also analyse the opponent we’re facing—a Málaga side coming off a convincing win against Deportivo and playing very well. They already did so last season with a coach who has very clear ideas and with young, quality players. We will have to do things very well to be closer to victory."
Changes after the Villa de Leganés match: "We saw very interesting things and it was shown that everyone is switched on. What matters is that everyone understands they are here to help the team from whatever role they have at any given time. Those are real teams, and that’s the conclusion we took from the other day. It’s not just training sessions, but also these types of matches. It doesn’t surprise me, because they are all capable of playing and nobody maintains optimal form over ten months."
Absences: "There is always some player with minor issues; someone had a fever, but the only definite absence is Pulido."
Cissé: "He has great ability to recover well from efforts. He played many minutes, but today he trained normally, and we’ll see how he feels after tomorrow’s final training session."
Goalkeeper position: "There is no position with a closed case. Everyone is prepared to play when needed. San Román is here because of his level, and that always benefits the team."
Álex Millán: "He hadn’t played in recent matches, but before that he featured in almost all of them. I was really happy for Álex, Róber, Benji, Enric… But it doesn’t surprise me because I see them train. He has chances to play, just like the others. The attitude and commitment of this squad is a ten out of ten, and that will show in the team’s performance in the long run."
Winless at home: "We’ve lacked accuracy, but it will come. We must persist and insist on that, but we are convinced the victory will come at home. The supporters give us that extra energy; we hope and are convinced that Sunday must be the day, following the most effective path—doing things well."
Rubén Peña and Juan Cruz: "After the time he was out, Rubén showed what he is capable of. Juan needs to gradually reach his level and he is doing that. But it’s not only about them—in Andorra, Figueredo played and was outstanding. What we want is competition, for everyone to make our decisions harder."
Lack of efficiency: "I wouldn’t only talk about the forwards because that would be too much pressure. It’s not only them who must score—Naim, Juan, Róber, the wingers… It’s not essential for one player to score twenty goals; sometimes goals are distributed. It’s true we are creating plenty; together with Racing, we are the two teams with the highest expected‑goals numbers, but they almost triple us in goals scored. I’d be much more concerned if we weren’t creating chances. We must keep generating and find that finishing touch in the final meters."
Franquesa: "The match the other day was excellent for him—he was very good. Given where he’s coming from, it's normal he felt some discomfort after the match. I’m sure he will help us a lot."
Málaga: "They had several matches without winning and were struggling to score, and suddenly they put three past Deportivo. That shows how difficult this league is and how tough Sunday’s game will be. But if we’ve shown anything, it’s that—even if the results aren’t what we want—we can beat any opponent, and that gives us calm and confidence."
