C.D. Leganés won its debut in this edition of the Copa de S.M. El Rey, beating C.D. Azuaga (1-4). Zakarías put the Extremadurans ahead, but Lega came back with goals from Álex Millán, Miguel, Roberto López, and Melero.
Zakarías gave Azuaga an early lead, but Álex Millán equalized before halftime
Leganés fielded a completely new starting lineup compared to the last league match, with only Marvel repeating as a starter in Paco López's lineup. The team was notable for the inclusion of 19-year-old Senegalese center back Djibril Gueye, a player from the Pepinero reserve team who had already played in the Villa de Leganés Trophy and was making his debut with the first team in an official match.
The match started well for Azuaga, who took the lead in the 6th minute from a set piece through Zakarías, who headed in a cross from the wing to beat San Román. Leganés tried to react with several shots from Roberto López that were saved by the home goalkeeper, as well as a goal disallowed for Melero for offside. Andrés Campos and Óscar Plano also had chances before Álex Millán equalized before halftime, taking advantage of a deep ball from Melero and beating Jaime Durán with a powerful right-footed shot. The score was tied at one going into halftime.
Miguel put Lega ahead, who gave three youth players their debut
The second half kicked off with Leganés' first substitution, Miguel de la Fuente coming on for Óscar Plano. It didn't take long for the number 9 to make an impact on the game, but in the 53rd minute he had a goal disallowed for offside. However, in the 55th minute, he collected an assist from Melero and fired home first time to make it 1-2 and put Lega ahead.
Around the hour mark, Jorge Sáenz came on for Andrés Campos in Leganés' second substitution, and they almost sealed the win in the 64th minute when Álex Millán found himself one-on-one with the home goalkeeper, who made the save. In the 69th minute, Diawara came on for Guirao and two more youth players made their official debut: 19-year-old Zambian midfielder Gift Siame and 19-year-old Spanish-Moroccan striker Suleiman El Haddadi.
Roberto López and Melero sealed the victory in the last quarter of an hour
The final blow came in the 77th minute with the score at 1-3, when Roberto López received the ball from Miguel and beat the Azuaga goalkeeper with his left foot. Melero rounded off the scoring in the 84th minute, picking up a pass from Roberto López himself to make it 1-4 and score his first goal as a Pepinero player.
Leganés thus advances to the next round and will be in the draw for the second round, which will be played on December 2, 3, or 4, with the opponent and venue to be confirmed.
