As if it was today… eleven years ago Leganés started the second division promotion playoffs tying against Real Jaén (2-2) at Butarque. The playoff was open after the first match and the winning team would be decided at Andalucía.
It was the first promotion playoffs for the pepinetos after their relegation to Segunda División 'B' in 2004. The white and blues finished the 2008/09 league on the fourth position of their group and were to play against Jaén that was second on theirs. Agustín Vara’s initial squad was: Raúl Moreno, Gustavo, Javi, Casquero, Garrido, Javi Vicente, Zarandona, Juli, Carlos Martínez, Nacho Aznar and Aníbal. Mario, Quini and Jano also playe don that match coming from the bench.
Goals were scored on the second half. Jaén started winning after Arriaga’s goal but Leganés tied the match through Javi Vicente. The visitors managed to take the lead again with Esparza’s goal but Leganés did not quit and tied again thanks to an incredible goal by Mario. At the end it was a tie (2-2) and everything was going to be decided at La Victoria.
