As if it was today… nineteen years ago Leganés visited Atlético de Madrid for the first time on an official match at Vicente Calderón Stadium. It was Torres’ debut that day. The pepineros lost by one goal (1-0) on a match that would be part of history as Fernando Torres made his debut for the rojiblancos that day.
It was the 39th matchday of the 2000/01 second division season and Enrique Martín’s team was fighting to survive on the league. The team was five points above relegation zone and was playing against an Atlético that was looking forward to return to first division after being relegated on the previous season.
That day, Leganés’ initial squad was: Raúl Arribas, Óscar, Julián Ronda, Macanás, Lambea, Fede Marín, Puñal, Merino, José Mari, Miguel Ángel and Makukula. Barbarín, Álex and Trigeros played on the second half.
The match only goal was scored by Luque on the second half just some minutes before the player was replaced by Fernando Torres who made his debut as a rojiblanco. Leganés didn’t manage to get any point that day and would need to fight on the three remaining matches to look after the survival of next season.
