On June 28, 2013, C.D. Leganés announced the hiring of Asier Garitano as the new coach. The man from Bergara arrived at Butarque, then in Second Division 'B', with the aim of trying to return the club to professional soccer after nine years in the bronze category.
Leganés had been relegated in 2004, and since then had played three play-offs for promotion to the Second Division without success, losing to Real Jaén, Badalona and Lleida Esportiu, the latter just a month before Asier's arrival following the departure of the previous coach, Pablo Alfaro. With his arrival, the squad was almost completely transformed, achieving second place in the regular league and the long-awaited promotion in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat.
Two promotions, two relegations, a Copa del Rey semi-final and 245 games under his management in two seasons.
In the 2014/15 season, the season of the return to professional soccer, Leganés would achieve a comfortable permanence finishing tenth in the table, and in the following season they were to make history by being promoted to the First Division for the first time in their 88 years of life. Insua's goal in Anduva certified the Blue and Whites' achievement.
Asier would remain linked to Leganés for the following two seasons, in which the pepineros would remain in the elite of our soccer. The first season in Primera ended with a last-day stay at San Mamés, while the 2017/18 season would bring a Copa del Rey semi-final and a relegation without too much suffering. At the end of that season, Asier put an end to his time at Leganés.
After two and a half seasons away from Butarque, with experiences at Real Sociedad and Deportivo Alavés, Garitano returned to Leganés on January 27 to coach the team again, now in LaLiga SmartBank. In a few weeks he will begin his seventh season at the club, his sixth, which will start from the first matchday, after having managed 245 official matches and being the second coach with the most matches only behind Luis Ángel Duque.
