Samuel Eto’o played his last match as a pepinero 22 years ago.

On May 9th, 1998, twenty-two years ago, Samuel Eto’o played his last of thirty matches with the C.D Leganés jersey. The sixteen-year-old Cameroonian forward played the 1997/98 season for the pepineros on loan from Real Madrid.

Eto’o was part of Pedro Braojos’ squad on the season in which the club moved from Municipal Luis Rodríguez de Miguel to Estadio Municipal Butarque. Eto’o was on the initial squad on the first match at Butarque against Xerez (February 14th, 1998).

Wearing the 11 on his back, Eto’o played a total of thirty League and Copa del Rey matches and scored four goals: three on the league against Toledo, Albacete and Logroñés and one against Rayo Vallecano for the cup.

Eto’o played his last match as a pepinero against Toledo at Salto del Caballo. He left to play with his national team on the France 1998 World Cub where he made his debut on the competition facing Italy. After that tournament he started an amazing career in which he would be known as one of the best forwards on the world.
