As if it was today… 22 years ago Levante visited Leganés at Butarque. The pepineros were managed by Pedro Braojos and were playing their sixth official match after their new stadium inauguration. The first visiting team to win at Butarque was Numancia just a few days before Levante’s match.
Leganés was positioned on the middle of the league’s table. With just 7 matches remaining both relegation and promotion spots were difficult to reach. Butarque had the match with the most goals in its history that day.
The pepineros’ initial squad that day was: Unanua, Óscar, Julián Ronda, Tocho, Llorens, Cuéllar, Jaime, José Mari, Vidal Etoo and Catanha. Aitor Tornavaca, Olaeta and Paquito were part of the match on second half. By half time Levante was winning 1-2 after coming back from the Lega’s goal scored by José Mari. Two goals by Catanha and one by Aitor allowed the team to comeback on the match but Granotas managed to score twice on the last 5 minutes to tie the match and define the final 4-4.
The picture portraits Leganes´ initial squad against Extremadura on that season at Butarque. Samuel Etoo, Catanha, Alfredo and Óscar, among others were part of the team.
