As if it was today… 23 years ago Leganés won against Lleida at Municipal Luis Rodríguez de Miguel (3-2). It was a crazy match with two penalty kicks and two expulsions. Pedro Largo, Miguel Ángel and Gudelj scored for the pepineros.
It was the 1996/97 season and Leganés was playing it fourth consecutive season on Segunda División. The white and blues were ranked on mid table and needed a win to guarantee another year on the category.
Luis Sánchez Duque’s team was: Julio Iglesias, Julián Ronda, Pedro Largo, Tocho, Angelín, Alfredo, Jaime, Melgar, Gudelj, Miguel Ángel and Juanmi. Gorka, Carlitos and Villoria played on second half. Leganés started winning with a header by Pedro Largo after a corner kick. Miguel Ángel managed to score the second goal some minutes later.
Lleida got in the match on the second half through a great free kick by Álex Fernández. The same player scored later to tie the match after a polemic penalty kick called by the referee in which Alfredo would be sent off because of his protest. Leganés managed to get the three points after a penalty kick goal scored by Gudelj.
