As if it was today… eight years ago Leganés survived from relegation to third division on the last matchday of the season after winning against Atlético 'B' (5-2) at Butarque. It was Víctor Fernández’s farewell match after a difficult season for the team.
It was the last match of the season and Leganés needed to sum to keep the category, the team was about to face Atlético de Madrid’s second team which had chances to reach the promotion playoffs. Players such as Iago Herrerín and Saul were part of the rojiblancos’ squad. Víctor Fernández initial squad was: Rubén Falcón, Pedro Hernández, Mario, Biel Medina, Jesús Álvaro, De Lerma, David López, Tonino, Canario, Chupe and Rubén Navarro. Javi Ballesteros, Vicente and Sebas (debut match) got to play on second half.
Leganés took a solid lead from the start and by the first half hour the team was already winning 3-0 with goals scored by Chupe, David López and Rubén Navarro. After the rojiblancos shortened the distance, the pepineros managed to score two more goals through Canario and Vicente on second half.
It was a hard season for the pepineros who saved themselves from relegation on the last match of the season. Four coaches had been part of the team so far that year. Víctor Fernández said goodbye from the fans with tears on his eyes that day. The white and blues were certainly hoping for better days to come.
