As if it was today… six years ago Leganés got in the promotion playoffs to second division after beating Bilbao Athletic (1-0) at Butarque on the league’s last matchday. Velasco’s goal allowed the team to be the second to qualify to playoffs.
It was the last matchday of the regular season and anything could happen: Leganés could qualify first on its group or get eliminated. The team was facing a direct rival (The now pepinero’s captain Unai Bustinza was playing for Bilbao). Asier Garitano’s initial squad was: Queco Piña, Postigo, Mantovani, Santamaría, Luis Ruiz, Alberto Martín, Eraso, Velasco, Álvaro García, Carlos Martínez and Carlos Álvarez. Fran Moreno, Carlos de la Vega and Candela played on second half.
First half was polemic (a penalty kick and a goal for the pepineros that were not called by the referee) but did not have any goals. Velasco’s goal came on the second half after a play by Postigo. Leganés held the lead that qualified the team for the next playoff round as second because of Sestao River’s victory that allowed Bilbao Athletic to be the group winners.
Leganés got into playoffs for the fourth time on the last 4 seasons. Real Jaén, Badalona and Lleida eliminated the team on the last occasions. This time the team was about to play against Guijuelo.
