As if it was today… two years ago Leganés qualified mathematically to next LaLiga’s season. Even though the team lost at Bernabéu the previous day, Deportivo’s loss against Barcelona allowed the pepineros to secure a spot on the first division for next season.
Leganés played against Real Madrid at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium on April 28th, 2018. It was the 35th LaLiga’s matchday and a tie would allow the pepineros to secure a spot out of relegation. The team didn’t manage to get any points that day, losing 2-1 against the locals. Asier Garitano’s initial squad that day was: Cuéllar, Zaldua, Bustinza, Siovas, Diego Rico, Rubén Pérez, Gabriel, El Zhar, Brasanac, Amrabat and Guerrero. Beauvue, Eraso and Naranjo played on the second half.
The madridistas scored twice on the first half through Bale and Mayoral. Lega managed to short the distance with a Brasanac goal after half time. Despite leaving Bernabéu without any points, the team would save from relegation thanks to the next day’s results.
Deportivo was on relegation spots and needed to win to prevent Leganés to save from relegation. Barcelona managed to win at Riazor 2-4 which allowed the pepineros to mathematically secure a spot on first division for next season. It would mean the white and blues’ third season at first division.
